Copper Lake and Vesper Glacier from Vesper Peak, Cascade Mountains

This photo was taken from the summit of Vesper Peak in the North-Central Cascade Mountains. The area was a hotbed of gold and silver mining activity in the late 1800's through the early part of the 20th century. Most mining stopped when it became too costly to get the ore from the mines to the smelters in the lowlands around Seattle. They also found that most of the valuable ore was located too deep in the rock to make for easy and economic removal.

Many of the old mines still dot the mountainsides of the Monte Cristo area in Washington state.
