Alley in the Square - 24" x 30" Oil pastel on Masonite
Pioneer Square
and its diverse inhabitants bring truth to the adage: "the
more things change, the more they stay the same". Most of
the bones of Pioneer Square have not changed in a hundred years
and when the traffic goes away, you can imagine the men in bowling
hats stepping into a pub, and women with bustles waiting for
a streetcar.
The reference
for this oil pastel was a photograph I took in Pioneer Square,
Seattle, in the 1980's. I was taken by the contrast of the dark
alleyway against the illuminated subjects walking down the sidewalk,
framed by the rich earth tones of the old brick building with
long, late afternoon shadows.
