Prairie
Stream -
20" x 30" oil pastel on canvas
"Prarie
Stream" is from of a series of oil pastel paintings inspired
by Ancient Lake(s) in Washington State. Ancient Lakes lie in
the Potholes Coulee, which was cut into the plateau that forms
the steep-walled banks of the Columbia River in eastern Washington
state.
More than 10,000
years ago the Lake Missoula floods created some of the most stunning
land forms on earth - studied by NASA for their similarity to
Martian landscapes. Much of the eastern half of what is now the
state of Washington was scoured down to bedrock by a series of
gargantuan flood events from an ancient ice-dammed glacial lake
that once straddled the US-Canadian border. The resulting formation
of dramatic canyons, coulees, cataracts and flood plains occurred,
not in the millions of years once thought, but in a mere matter
of days. Ancient Lakes coulee is part of the Channeled Scablands
and is within the Quincy Wildlife Refuge.
