A Primal Wilderness...
I once found myself 50 feet from a large male cougar, while bushwhacking up a steep ridge in the Cascade Mountains.
I was left with a deepened reverence for our last American Lion, and for the wilderness they belong in.

Help Save the American Mountain Lion.

Mountain Lion in the Mist

One of the surviving large predator species left in North America, the American Mountain Lion (puma concolor) was once widely distributed across the continent, but has seen most of its range reduced to the states west of the Mississipi and the small and endangered population of the Florida Panther. It lives a secretive and tenuous existance, balanced precariously between shrinking habitat, loss of prey species and hunting. The reintroduction of wolf packs has also had an effect on cougars that inhabit the same territory. Wolf packs have been known to attack and kill mountain lions.

Cougar Alert

A mother cougar sits unflinching on powerful haunches as she assesses a potential threat. One such threat comes in the form of hunting dogs with radio beacons on their collars. This is the method many cougar hunters employ to bag their "trophy." Once the dogs have the cougar cornered or "treed," the hunter grabs his rifle and remote tracking device, finds where his dogs have the animal trapped, and kills the cowering cat. It's considered a sport by many hunters and guides who charge big fees for the thrill they provide their customers. Wildlife agencies in many states are mostly funded by the sale of hunting licenses, including thousands in fees for the legal permission to kill these magnificent predators.
